How to care for box braids and make them last longer

Box braids are a beautiful, protective style — but how you care for them decides how long they last and how healthy your hair stays underneath. Here is the aftercare routine we recommend from the salon.

Why aftercare matters

Braids are protective, which means they give your natural hair a break from daily manipulation. But protective only works if you keep your scalp clean and your hair moisturised. A little daily care keeps your style looking fresh and protects the hair underneath, so when it's time to take them down you see growth and health, not breakage.

Protect your box braids at night with a silk scarfWrap your braids in a silk scarf before bed to reduce frizz.

Protect your braids at night

Friction is the enemy of fresh braids. Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf before bed, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. This reduces frizz, keeps your edges smooth and stops the braids from rubbing against rough cotton. It's a small habit that adds weeks to your style.

Wash and refresh

You can — and should — cleanse your scalp while wearing braids. Dilute a gentle shampoo with water and use a nozzle bottle to reach the scalp between the parts. Massage lightly, rinse thoroughly, and let your hair air dry fully before tying it up. A clean scalp prevents itchiness and build-up.

Moisturise your scalp and length

A light scalp oil or braid spray a few times a week keeps the skin comfortable and the braids supple. Avoid heavy products that sit on top and attract lint. A little goes a long way — focus on the roots and the ends of your natural hair.

Keep your edges happy

Tension is what causes thinning edges, not the braids themselves. If a style ever feels too tight, tell your stylist straight away — we can ease it before it causes damage. Between appointments, go easy on edge gels and never sleep with your braids pulled into a very tight ponytail every night.

When to take them down

Most box braid styles look their best for 4 to 8 weeks. Leaving them in much longer can lead to matting and breakage at the roots. When you notice new growth making the braids heavy or your scalp feeling tender, it's time to book a takedown and a deep conditioning treatment.
